History
A man named Peter Cancro, then age 14 at Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey took a part-time job at Mike's Submarines, a neighborhood sandwich shop in the adjacent Point Pleasant borough and few blocks west of Point Pleasant Beach High School. He founded this in 1956, then on its third owner. His mother suggested he buy it when the shop went up for sale yet again in 1975. Securing help from a high school football coach who also worked as a banker, Peter Cancro, then 17 years old and a high school senior, was able to pull together $125,000 in three days. Today, Peter Cancro is the owner and chief executive officer of the company.
He began franchising the restaurant in 1987. By the year 2014, it had 750 stores, with 650 more in development. In 2015, there were 197 more locations that were launched, exceeding 1,000 stores during that time. Now, Jersey Mike's Subs are gaining a larger presence right at the West Coast, particularly in Southern California.
